How To Animate Data In Numbers For Mac

How to Animate a Table

As a whole: Select the table and apply any custom animation.

Add a chart/graph, select the proper symbol on the “Format” tab in the toolbar. Select the chart/graph on the slide. Select the “Animations” tab in the tool bar and select the animation you want to use. Now by default PowerPoint will animate the whole chart/graph, thus all elements will appear at once. Or you can select Number, Currency, Accounting, or Percentage if you want those specific number formats applied to your numerical data. Using Paste Values. If you need to move text cells that contain numbers into a new cell or column, you can use the Paste Special feature.

By parts (rows or columns):
Method 1: (Recommended):
Insert or create the table. With the whole table selected, from the Drawing bar, select Draw | Ungroup . Each cell is now a drawing object. Select the cells that you want to appear together and group them (Draw | Group). Apply your animations to each grouped object. (Be careful as you work to not drag parts around.)

Method 2: Create a separate table for each row (or column) and apply custom animation to each one. (Yes, it is awkward!)

How to create separate tables for each row/column:

  • Turn off AutoLayout.
Or, undo AutoLayout each time you create a table.
  • Create the full table on a separate slide (which you will delete when you are done) or in Word with the size cells that you want.
  • Copy row (or column).
  • Paste onto your slide as a separate table. (Will be centered.)
  • Drag into position.
  • Repeat for each row (or column).
  • Arrange the tables on the slide so that the cell borders line up.
  • Select all the tables.
  • Applya Custom Animation effect.
  • Delete the temporary slide, if you used one.
  • Turn AutoLayout back on, if you wish.

Animations Conflict:

If you start applying custom animations on top of animation schemes (or just lots of custom animations), you may find some glitches in your Slide Show. The combinations do not always play well together.

Problem: Some effects do not show at all, but to advance the slides you have to click as though the effects were there!

Problem: Some effects reveal again what was already revealed.

Solution: Change the order of animations in the Custom Animation pane or delete some of them.

Problem: A custom animation on a certain slide does not work well with the animation applied by the slide's master. The animations from the master are grayed out in the Custom Animation pane and cannot be deleted or edited there. Changing the animation on the master will change it for all slides, which is not what you want!

Solution: Do not apply an animation scheme to the master. Apply an animation scheme to selected slides. For slides that you want to be different, apply a different scheme or Remove the scheme and apply custom animations.

Solution: Create a new master without the animation. Apply this new master to the selected slide - not to all of the slides.

Step-by-Step:Animate Data

What you will learn:

to apply custom animation
to create new master from old
to rename a master

to reveal chart by category

View Current Animation for Slide

The animation scheme that you applied to the slide master applies the Fade effect to the Title placeholder and the Wipe effect to the Body. What does it do to the chart?

  1. Select the slide Rain Days to show it in the Slide Pane.
  2. Click the Slide Show button at the bottom left. The Slide Show opens to the current slide. The Title fades into view.
  3. Click the slide. The chart wipes into view as one whole object.
  4. Press the ESC key to return to Normal view.

Animation Scheme:
Fade Title, Wipe Body

Apply Custom Animation

You can make the chart appear in parts, but you must create a Custom Animation to do so.

  1. Click on the chart to select it.
  2. If necessary, open the Custom Animation task pane.
    [ Slide Show | Custom Animation.. ]

  3. Click the Add Effect button at the top of the Custom Animation task pane and select Entrance and then Fade.
Fade does not show in the short list: Click on More Effects.. and select it from the full list of effects.
The Slide Pane automatically runs the new effect, which shows the chart fading into view as a whole.

The chart is now marked at the upper left with a box with the number 1.
There are no boxes to show the animations from the slide master. The Custom Animation pane lists those animations in gray.
  4. Click the Play button at the bottom of the Custom Animation pane.
As the list in the pane says, first the animations from the Master play and then the custom animation. This makes the chart wipe into view, disappear, and then fade into view. Whoops! You didn't want two effects on the same chart!

Run animation effects:
Fade Title, Wipe chart, Fade chart

Create Copy of Slide Master

The only way to keep the animations on the slide master from playing is to create a new master. This feature appeared first in PowerPoint 2002. You want to include all of the formatting of the Slide Master except the animation scheme.

The icons beside the thumbnail show that some kind of animation has been applied.

Edit, Rename, & Apply Master

You can now make changes to the new master. The new master will look just like the old one. You can give it a new name so you can tell the difference in the list of design templates.

How To Animate Videos

  2. With the new slide master still selected, click on the #1 animation in the list in the pane. This is for the Body placeholder.

  4. Hover over each thumbnail at the left. A popup tip tells you the name of the design template and which slides use it. VERY helpful.

  5. Right click on the thumbnail of the new slide master and select Rename Master from the popup menu.
    A dialog appears.

  6. Type Chart Master and click the Rename button.
  7. Close the Master view.
  8. If necessary, show the slide Rain Days in the Slide Pane.
  9. Show the Design Templates task pane. [ Format | Slide Design.. | Design Templates ]
  10. Hover over the templates at the top, Used in this presentation. Do not click the template thumbnail! That would apply the template to all slides.
If you did click, Undo immediately.
Which is the new Chart Master?

  11. Click on the arrow at the right of the Chart Master template and select Apply to Selected Slides from the menu.
  12. Click the Slide Show button at the bottom left of the window to see the animations for this slide.
Now the Title fades into view and the chart fades into view. The Wipe effect is gone! Whew!

Run animation effects:
Fade Title, Fade chart
